Masala Idli | Poha Idli | Chatpati Idli recipe


How to make Masala Idli | Poha idly | Chatpati Idli for Breakfast

This is delicious yummy recipe of a famous south indian dish "Idli". This is an "idli" with a twist. This can be served for breakfast or mid-day snack. Idlis are light and steamed. Idlis can be served with Sambar or chutney. If you want to have it without them then u can try this twist recipe.

Lets start with a recipe : 

Ingredients for Idli : 16 Idlis

Idly, Idli, Sambar idli, sambhar idli
Plain pieces of Idlis


  • 1 1/2 cup Rice 
  • 1 cup urad Dal
  • water
  • salt as per taste
  • oil

Ingredients for Masala : 8 Idlis

  • 1 Teaspoon olive/refine oil
  • 1 Teaspoon Mustard seeds (Sarso)
  • 8 curry leaves (Kadi Patta)
  • 2 green chillies (optional)
  • 3 sliced onions
  • 3 cloves of garlic (optional)
  • Salt according to taste
  • 1 tablespoon chaat masala
  • 1/2 tablespoon garam masala
  • 1/4 tablespoon red chilli powder (optional)
  • 1/4 tablespoon pepper (kali mirch)
  • 1 Lemon
  • 1 pinch asafoetida (Heeng)
  • 1/4 tablespoon turmeric powder (Haldi)
  • Coriander leaves for garnishing
Preparation for Idli :
  1. Wash rice and urad dal and soak them in water overnight (if you have to make it on the same day, soak it for 6 hours atleast)
  2. Grind it into a smooth batter with enough water
  3. Add salt and mix it well
  4. Keep it aside for another 3 to 4 hours for fermentation
  5. Take idli plate, grease it with oil and add batter in the plate
  6. Heat 1/2 cup of water in the pan where idli plate can fit in and steam it for 10 minutes on low flame ( You can even place it in microwave oven if u have a microwave safe idli plate) 
  7. For checking out if its done, place a knife in one of the idli, if its not sticky, its done
  8. Take out the plate and carefully take out the idlis
  9. You can serve it with coconut chutney or sambar or you can make our special breakfast masala Idly
Preparation for Masala Idli :
  1. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds
  2. Wait till it splutters, add onion, green chillies, garlic, heeng and curry leaves
  3. When onion turns pink, add salt, garam masala, chilli powder, chaat masala 
  4. Cook on on low flame for few more seconds
  5. Cut idlies in 4 pieces and add it in the masala
  6. Add turmeric powder, pepper and lemon to it
  7. Cook it for 1 minute on low flame and mix it well
  8. Garnish it with coriander leaves and serve hot.

Note : You can even use left over Idlies for masala idli, it will make them fresh and delicious.
