Recipe of Rice vermicelli upma

How to make rice vermicelli or rice upma

Rice vermicelli is easy, delicious and healthy recipe for breakfast. You can add any vegetables you like in rice upma and it can be prepared without veggies too. It is easily digestible and light for stomach. It is an excellent breakfast option.

Lets start with the recipe :

Ingredients :

  • 2 cup rice vermicelli 
    Rice vermicelli, Rice upma

  • 1/2 cup peanuts
  • 8 curry leaves
  • 2 teaspoon mustard seeds (Sarso)
  • 2 teaspoon cumin seeds (Jeera)
  • 8 curry leaves (Kadi patta)
  • 4 dry red chilly
  • 1 tablespoon chana dal (Bengal gram split)
  • 2 teaspoon asafoetida (heeng) 
  • 1 tablespoon refine / olive oil
  • Salt according to taste
  • 2 teaspoon chaat masala
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 lemon (according to taste)
Preparation :

  1. Boil water in a big pan, add 1 teaspoon oil and rice vermicelli in boiling water and let it be in the water for 10 minutes
  2. Then drain water and keep it aside
  3. Heat oil in a non-stick pan, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, peanuts and asafoetida in it
  4. When mustard seeds and cumin seeds splutter
  5. Add onions, chana dal, curry leaves and red dry chilly in it
  6. When onion turns light brown add salt, chaat masala, pepper and mix it
  7. Add rice vermicelli in it and toss it and mix it slowly 
  8. Add lemon juice and mix
  9. Serve hot rice vermicelli immediately with pickle or a chutney

Note : 

  • You can add any vegetable in this upma according to your taste
  • Don't mix and stir vermicelli often once done
  • Serve vermicelli immediately otherwise it will become sticky

  1. This looks wonderful! I've never cooked with vermicelli before, but you make it look so easy :) Where would you recommend finding some of these spices? Are they all in a standard grocery store?

    1. Thanks Paula. I am glad you like it. And yes it is an easy and delicious recipe. You can try it out. You will get these spices in a standard grocery store or you can visit an Indian grocery store. There you will get these spices for sure. If you don't find them let me know I will share the substitutes of these spices. :)

  2. Vermicelli upma is one of my favourite. I use wheat vermicelli often. Your version looks good, I'll try it soon..

    1. Thanks fatima. That would be great. Give it a try. Rice vermicelli tastes yum and is light on stomach. You can checkout semolina vermicelli too. I am sure you will like that too. :)
