Recipe of vegetable Upma

How to make vegetable Upma

Vegetable upma is easy, delicious and healthy recipe for breakfast. You can add any vegetables you like in upma and it can be prepared without veggies too. It is easily digestible and light for stomach. It is an excellent breakfast option. You can roast extra sooji/semolina and can store it in an air tight container and can be used in making upma anytime. Or you can even use roasted sooji for making sooji/semolina halwa (pudding).

Ingredients :





  • 2 cup sooji (rawa, semolina)
  • 2 teaspoon mustard seeds (Sarso)
  • 2 teaspoon cumin seeds (Jeera)
  • 8 curry leaves (Kadi patta)
  • 4 dry red chilly
  • 1 tablespoon dhuli urad dal (split black gram)
  • 1 tablespoon chana dal (Bengal gram split)
  • 2 teaspoon asafoetida (heeng) 
  • 1/2 cup peanuts
  • 1 tablespoon refine / olive oil
  • 4 chopped carrots
  • 2 chopped onions
  • 1 chopped yellow bell pepper (Capsicum)
  • 1/2 cup chopped beans
  • 1 chopped green bell pepper (Capsicum)
  • Salt according to taste
  • 2 teaspoon chaat masala
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 lemon (according to taste)
Preparation :



  1. Dry roast sooji/semolina in a pan for 10 minutes on low flame till you smell the aroma.
  2. Once done, keep it aside
  3. Heat oil in a non-stick pan, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, peanuts and asafoetida in it
  4. When mustard seeds and cumin seeds splutter, add urad dal and chana dal in it, when they turn golden
  5. Add onions, curry leaves and red dry chilly in it
  6. When onion turns light brown, add carrot, yellow and green bell pepper,and beans in it
  7. Cook on low flame, then cover with a lid, till the vegetables cook properly
  8. Add salt, chaat masala, pepper and mix it
  9. Add 3 cups of water, add roasted sooji when water starts boiling 
  10. Stir it until it absorbs all the water
  11. Add lemon juice and mix
  12. Serve hot upma immediately with pickle or a chutney

Note : 
  1. Serve upma immediately otherwise it will become sticky
  2. You can add corn or any other vegetable in the upma
