Recipe of Malai Kofta in tomato gravy

Malai Kofta is a popular Indian delicacy. Malai kofta are delicious cottage cheese and cashew stuffed dumplings dunked in gravy. Dumplings are soft cottage cheese balls which will melt in your mouth. Gravy can vary, you can make it in cashew based gravy, spinach gravy or tomato based gravy.

I have made in rich creamy onion tomato based gravy. This aromatic dish is full of flavours and aroma of Indian spices. It is a best vegetarian curry which can goes well with any Indian flatbread or rice.The best part about this dish is that it is easy to make.

Lets start with the recipe :

Ingredients for Dumplings:

  • 1 cup mashed or grated cottage cheese (Paneer)
  • 12 cashews
  • 2 slices of bread
  • Salt according to taste
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 teaspoon chaat masala
  • Finely chopped coriander leaves
  • Oil for deep frying
Ingredients for Gravy :
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 2 chopped onions
  • 8 crushed tomatoes
  • 8 chopped garlic cloves
  • 2 chopped green chillies
  • Salt according to taste
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala 
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1 tablespoon cream
Preparation for Dumplings :
  1. In a bowl, add mashed cottage cheese (Paneer), broken cashews, coriander leaves, and crumbled bread
  2. Add salt, pepper, turmeric and chaat masala in the same and mix well
  3. Make 8 medium sized balls of the mixture and keep it in a plate
  4. Heat oil in a deep pan
  5. Deep fry few of the balls together on low flame
  6. When they turn golden brown from both the sides, take them out on a tissue or a oil absorbent paper
  7. Keep them aside
Preparation for gravy :

  1. Heat oil in a pan, add jeera in it
  2. When they splutter, add chopped garlic, onion and green chillies
  3. When onions turn light brown, add crushed tomato
  4. Add coriander powder, garam masala, pepper and salt
  5. Mix well and let it cool down
  6. Blend the whole tadka(mixture) in blender
  7. Mix well and add sour cream in the mixture
  8. Cook for few more minutes and it is done
  9. Add dumplings to the gravy while serving
  10. Serve hot with Indian flatbread or rice

Note :
  1. Make sure to serve immediately after adding dumplings otherwise they will dissolve in the gravy
  2. You can increase or decrease the spices according to your taste
  3. You can shallow fry the dumplings too
  4. I have added bread for binding the dumplings, you can substitute it with potatoes and corn flour

    1. Helene thanks for stopping by. You can use potato and mozzarella cheese for making dumplings if you couldn't find cottage cheese. Do let me know how it turned out if you give it a try. :)
