How to make Tadka Idli | Masala Idli

If you have leftover Idlis in your refrigerator, then this is the best and delicious way to use them. Masala idli/Tadka Idli is the perfect way to turn leftover Idlis into a delicious breakfast. It is quick, easy and healthy snack. If you have Idlis ready, you can make this yummy recipe in no time. You will love the taste and aroma of Indian spices that are used in this recipe.

Masala Idli, Tadka Idli, Fried Idli

These are spicy crispy idlis which are flavoured with Indian spices. They are perfect for breakfast and can also served as an appetizer for parties. This is the perfect variation to simple idlis.

Lets start with a recipe :

Ingredients for Tadka / Masala Idli
  • 1 teaspoon olive/refine oil
  • 10 chopped Idlis
  • 1 teaspoon Mustard seeds (Sarso)
  • 6 curry leaves (Kadi Patta)
  • 2 chopped green chillies (optional)
  • 3 finely sliced medium sized onions
  • 3 chopped cloves of garlic 
  • 3 finely chopped medium size tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon tomato sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chilly powder
  • Salt according to taste
  • 1 tablespoon chaat masala
  • 1/2 tablespoon garam masala
  • 1/4 tablespoon pepper (kali mirch)
  • 1 Lemon
  • 1 pinch of asafoetida (Hing)
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder (Haldi)
  • Coriander leaves for garnishing
Preparation for Masala Idli :
  1. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds
  2. When it splutters, add onion, green chillies, garlic, asafoetida and curry leaves
  3. When onion turns light brown, add chopped tomato and cook on medium flame
  4. Add salt, garam masala, turmeric powder, chilli powder, chaat masala, and pepper in it 
  5. Cook on low flame till tomatoes and spices are mixed and cooked properly 
  6. Chop idlis in small pieces and add it in the masala
  7. Add lemon and tomato sauce to it and mix it well
  8. Garnish it with coriander leaves and serve hot.
