How to make Masala Pav

Recipe of Masala Pav | Mumbai style masala pav

Masala Pav is a famous Indian street food which is made by blending vegetables in butter with Indian spices topped on soft and spongy toasted buns. It is a popular Mumbai roadside food which is relished by all. It is a delicious snack which is filling and easy to prepare. Garnishing of coriander leaves, onion and red chilly enhances the taste of this flavorful snack.

It is a traditional meal of India which is full of Indian flavors. When vegetables are blended and mixed in onion tomato gravy, aroma of spices will make you crave for it. It is an Indian filling savory snack which is full of taste and flavor.

Lets start with the recipe :

Ingredients :
  • 8 soft ready-made buns
  • 2 crushed/chopped onions
  • 4 crushed tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon ginger paste
  • 6 finely chopped cloves of garlic
  • 3 chopped green chillies
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • pinch of asafoetida (Hing)
  • pinch of red chilly
  • Salt according to taste
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 teaspoon chaat masala
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 2 boiled potatoes
  • 1/2 chopped cauliflower 
  • 1/2 chopped cabbage
  • 1 chopped capsicum
  • 3 chopped carrot
  • 1/2 chopped bottle gourd
  • 1/2 cup chopped beans 
  • 1 lemon
  • butter
  • Coriander leaves, chopped onion, red chilly for garnishing
Preparation for Gravy :

  • Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a pan
  • Add cumin seeds, garlic and asafoetida (Hing) in it
  • When it splutter, add onions, ginger, green chillies and garlic paste in it
  • When onion turns golden brown, add crushed tomato 
  • Add salt, pepper, red chilly, garam masala and chaat masala in it
  • Let it cook on low flame for sometime, until gravy cooks 
  • Boil vegetables in a pressure cooker, they should be soft enough to be mashed
  • Take out excess stock of vegetables and keep it aside
  •  Mash vegetables with the masher
  • Add mashed vegetables in the masala bhaji
  • Add 1 tablespoon butter in it
  • Put the lid on the pan and let the bhaji cook for sometime till it is dry and there is no water in it, stir it occasionaly 
  • Cook till it has thick dry consistency
  • Add lemon juice and mix it
  • Toast buns with butter and top it with the masala bhaji
  • Top it with chopped onion, chopped coriander leaves and red chilly
